China has encroached into Nepalese territory, threatening to cast a shadow on ties between the ruling Communist party in Nepal and Beijing. The local authorities Lapcha-Limi region in Humla have reported that China has constructed nine buildings one kilometer into the territory of Nepal. The encroachment came to light during an inspection of the remote Humla region from August 30 to September 9 by a local district officer, ET has reliably gathered. The Chinese army and border police are said to have occupied Nepalese territory at Namkha gaupalika (rural municipality).

Lapcha-Limi is a very strategic place from where Kailash Mansarovar can be seen clearly and the Chinese move is part of its expansionist designs, sources told ET from Kathmandu. The matter has been reported by the district administration to the Nepal ministry of home affairs and the ministry of foreign affairs. After the government report, the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, urged the KP Sharma Oli government to take back the territory after holding talks with Beijing but so far the PM has not said anything on the issue.

“The foreign affairs ministry should have waited for us to delineate the border after we found the missing pillar. Many of us have been going to that area since our childhood and it was always Nepali territory,” said a district official of Humla who did not want to be identified.

In June too, a Nepal government report stated that China is using road construction in Tibet to occupy its land and may establish border outposts in near future. Nepal’s Survey Department of Agriculture Ministry had then claimed that China was encroached at 10 places and has also been diverting the flow of rivers to increase its territory. President of the Tibetan government in exile, Lobsang Sangay, had earlier warned Nepal and other Asian nations saying that with the occupation of Tibet, in the 60s, Chinese leadership made it abundantly clear that Tibet is the Palm and that they have to go for its 5 fingers – Ladakh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
